- Folio.Doc is an explanation of the program,"Portfolio Plus",
- Folio for short. Folio.Doc is prepared August 1986 for Release
- 1.1 of "Portfolio Plus".
-
- The program, Portfolio Plus, will be called Folio when
- mentioned by name here.
-
- "Folio" is available in two (2) VERSIONS, A.for use with a
- Texas Instrument Professional Computer and B.for use with IBM PC and
- compatibles.
-
- "Folio" is offered to all parties under the following terms
- and conditions:
- 1. You are free to copy and use this program for your own
- personal use and to pass copies on to friends and associates.
- 2. User groups or clubs are free to make copies and pass
- them on to members.
- 3. After a reasonable trial period if you wish to retain and
- use Folio, you are requested to send $20.00 to:
- B. A. Simpson
- 4905 Voltaire Dr.

- and update notices)
- 4. No one is authorized to charge for this program. All
- Rights are reserved to the Author.
- 5. I assume no responsibility for Hardware, Software, Time,
- Money or anything else lost or damaged through the use or misuse
- of this program.
- 6. If you encounter any problems using the program I would
- appreciate you sending me notification of the problem.
- 7. I sincerely hope that you find "Portfolio Plus" helpful
- and that it works well for you.
-
- Folio has been a hobby and stepchild for me for the last two
- years as I have worked on it off and on. I will not release the
- source code in the immediate future.
-
- There is no way that I can accurately evaluate the worth of
- Folio to you. I have suggested $20.00 as a figure that you might
- consider. If you do not find that Folio is worth that much to you
- personally then send whatever amount you feel is fair. I will be
- very appreciative of any amount that you send and will not question
- your evaluation.
-
- Folio is designed to keep personal or family financial records
- on a historical basis. Records kept are divided into two categories,
- A. Net Worth, and B. Securities Portfolio. The total of "B" is ,of
- course, part of total "A". These two sets of figures are not auto
- linked through the computer. This means that you must manually
- transfer the total value of all funds invested in your security
- portfolio to that category in the Net Worth section of the program.
- This arrangement provides flexibility as working with the security
- side of the program will not automatically change the latest Net
- Worth Record.
-
- Both "Net Worth" and "Security Valuation" can be kept for 30
- separate time periods. A comparison of records for different time
- periods will provide an overview of financial progress.

-
- The first screen is a message listing the conditions under
- which the program is distributed.
-
- Next comes the Main Menu. This program is menu driven to
- provide user friendly ease of use. Most menus and procedures are
- self explanatory, however one technique is important to remember.
- ANY TIME YOU ARE ENTERING NUMBERS OR LETTERS YOU CAN CORRECT A TYPO
- ,(wrong key press), BY PRESSING THE BACK SPACE OR CONTROL-H KEYS.
- Remember that any time prior to pressing "Enter" or CR you can
- correct a mishit with "Back Space" or Control-H.
-
- The Main Menu presents six(6) choices of action. First press
- #5, "Help". Read this and return to the Main Menu.
-
- Next press choice #6. "Initialize Files". THE PROGRAM WILL
- NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY UNTIL FILES HAVE BEEN INITIALIZED. This choice
- originates the files that the program needs to operate. If you have
- not used this option prior to using other sections of the program the
- computer will attempt to open, read and write to files that do not
- exist. As a consequence your program will abort. This should cause
- no permanent damage to the program or your computer. Once the files
- you need to operate the program have been built the program will
- return to the Main Menu.
-
- *********************************************************************
-
- Folio is now ready to operate. The best way for you to find
- out how the programs works is to play around with it. Just choose any
- option and view the screens presented or enter any numbers you care
- to. You can pretend to be a multi-millionaire but the program balks at
- multi-billions. Astronomical numbers can cause the program to abort.
- Anytime that you feel comfortable with the program and are ready to
- use it for serious business just press Option #6 on the Main Menu. All
- files will then be erased and the counters will be reset to record
- No. 1 for both "Net Worth" and "Security Values". This process can be
- repeated as often as desired.
-
- **********************************************************************
-
- Main Menu Choice #1 "Prepare a New Net Worth Estimate" leads
- the program user through two (2) screens and requires entry of 28
- numbers. When all 28 numbers have been entered the program provides
- the Net Worth Estimate resulting from the figures entered. You will
- then have the choice of storing the just prepared estimate in the
- permanent file or not. If you choose to store the estimate, it will
- be stored as estimate #1. Later estimates will be stored as #2, #3,
- etc. When you first receive the program and initialize the files all
- records are blank. You must enter data before meaningful records can
- be viewed.
-
- There is no other method designed into the program to control
- the counter setting other than to use Main Menu option #6 that erases
- all files and sets counters to No. 1.
-
- When 30 estimates have been prepared and stored you can move
- the program, "Folio", to a second floppy disk or you can allow the
- program to write over previous estimate #1 with a new #1 estimate.
- This applies to both Net Worth and Securities Values. Thirty (30)
- sets of records is adequate for most purposes and people but the
- choice is yours to extend the number of records if you so desire.
-
- Main Menu Choice #2. "View Old Net Worth Estimate" leads to a
- second screen showing numbers and corresponding dates for previously
- stored Net Worth Estimates. All positions will be blank when you
- Initialize the Files and start the program. Your first Net Worth
- Estimate will be stored as record #1. and can then be viewed using
- this choice #2 on the Main Menu.
-
- Main Menu Choice #3. "Stock,Bond,Mutual Fund Portfolio Only"
- will move the program to a second menu with three (3) choices.
- #3-1 Choice "Revise Valuation of Securities" will move the program to
- a screen where all 50 securities are presented one after another.
- Security Names and numbers presented are those for the most recent
- record. Since there is no such record when you first start the
- program, the names first presented will be blank and the numbers will
- be zeros. To enter the first record and to update later records
- revise the previous record. #3-2 Choice will allow you to view the
- names and numbers for the securities you have just entered and later
- will allow you to view a history of portfolio values. #3-3 Choice
- will return you to the Main Menu.
-
- Most of the numbers requested are self-explanatory but
- following is clarification of a few terms used in the program:
-
- Real Estate Equity- The number resulting from the Market Value
- of all Real Estate you own or have interest in, minus any mortgage or
- other money owed on the property.
-
- Escrow Account- All funds that you have on deposit but are
- pledged or held in "Escrow".
-
- Value of Automobiles- substitute any and all vehicles.
